Upload a file in myCourses

After you create at least one Module or Unit in your course, you can upload files to it to share with your students. In the current Content Experience, you can also upload a file on the Overview page to display a welcome message, your course outline, or any other document.

You can upload a wide variety of file types to the Content tool and the Overview page. See here for a complete list.

Upload a file from your computer using drag and drop

Current content experience

After you create a Module, you will see an upload box that you can drag and drop files into. After you upload a file to a Module, you can drag and drop files directly into the list of Items.

Upload a file for the first time to an empty course

  1. On the Course Home page, click Content on the Navigation Bar.

  2. Create a Module for your file to be uploaded to:

    1. Click the Add a module… box at the bottom of the left sidebar.

    2. Enter the name of the Module (e.g., Introduction, Lecture Slides, Week 1).

    3. Press Enter on your keyboard or click outside the box to create the Module and then go to the Module you created.

  3. Drag and drop one or more files from your computer to the upload box in the middle of the page.

The upload box will disappear and the item you uploaded will appear in its place.

Upload additional files to a Module

After you upload a file to a Module, its upload box disappears and you can drag files directly into the list of Items.

  1. On the Course Home page, click Content on the Navigation Bar.

  2. Click the name of a Module in the sidebar.

  3. Drag and drop one or more files from your computer into the list of Items. A horizontal bar will appear in the area where you are dropping the file.

    The file will be uploaded where you dropped it in the list of Items.

New content experience

If your browser does not support drag and drop uploading:

  1. On the Course Home page, click Content on your Navigation Bar.

    • If you do not see Units listed under Table of Contents, create at least one UnitLesson, or Folder for your file(s).

  2. Create or select a UnitLesson, or Folder for your file to be uploaded to.

  3. Select Add Existing at the top-right of the page.

  4. Click Browse in the upload box at the bottom of the pop-up window.

  5. Locate and select the file on your computer and click Open.

The file will be automatically uploaded to the UnitLesson, or Folder that you selected.

Upload a file from your computer without using drag and drop

Current content experience

If your browser does not support drag and drop uploading:

  1. On the Course Home page, click Content on your Navigation Bar.

    1. If you see no Modules listed under Table of Contents, create at least one Module for your file(s):

      1. Click Add a module…

      2. Enter a name for the Module (e.g., Introduction, Lecture Slides, Week 1).

      3. Press Enter on your keyboard.

  2. Click Upload / Create and select Upload Files.

  3. In the pop-up window that appears, choose My Computer or Course Offering Files to find the location of your file and then click Upload.

  1. Locate and select the file on your computer and click Open. The file will appear in the pop-up window.

  2. Click Choose Destination to decide the location in which to store the file.

  3. Click Add.

New content experience

If your browser does not support drag and drop uploading:

  1. On the Course Home page, click Content on your Navigation Bar.

    1. If you do not see Units listed under Table of Contents, create at least one UnitLesson, or Folder for your file(s).

  2. Create or select a UnitLesson, or Folder for your file to be uploaded to.

  3. Select Add Existing at the top-right of the page.

  4. Click Browse in the upload box at the bottom of the pop-up window.

  5. Locate and select the file on your computer and click Open.

The file will be automatically uploaded to the UnitLesson, or Folder that you selected.

Replace uploaded files 

You can replace images and documents uploaded to the Content tab by editing the topic in the new Content experience.

  1. In the Content tab, select the topic containing the file you would like to replace.

  2. Click on the three dots (...) button at the top right corner of the window and select Edit.

  3. Click on the Replace button located next to the file name and select the new file either from your computer or from files already uploaded to your course.

  4. Click Add and Save and Close.

Add a content overview

The Overview page in Content allows you to create a front page that students will see the first time they click Content on the course Navigation Bar. If you do not add an Overview, students will be taken to the Table of Contents page instead.

Add a content Overview using drag and drop

  1. On the Course Home page, click Content on the Navigation Bar.

  2. Click Add Attachment.

  3. Drag and drop a file from your desktop to the upload box in the middle of the page.


    The file will automatically appear in the area below the upload box.

    To update or change the file, drag another file to the upload box.

Add a content Overview without using drag and drop

If your browser does not support drag and drop uploading:

  1. Click the down arrow beside Course Overview and click Add an attachment.

  1. In the pop-up window that appears, choose My Computer or Course Offering Files to find the location of your file and then click Upload.

  2. Locate and select the file on your computer and click Open. The file will appear in the pop-up window.

  3. Click Choose Destination to decide the location in which to store the file.

  4. Click Add.
