Assess assignments in myCourses

You can access the Evaluate submission page of an assignment for each student to view submissions, enter grades and feedback, and attach annotated files for your students to download from the View feedback page.

Access the evaluate submission page

The Evaluate submission page for an assignment allows you to assess students' work and/or view their submission(s).

  1. On the main Assignments page, click the name of an assignment.

  2. On the Submissions page, you will only see the names of students who have submitted a file through myCourses. If you want to assess students' work even if they haven't submitted their assignments:

    1. Expand the Hide search options menu. 

    2. Select Show everyone from the Submissions drop-down list.

    3. Click the magnifying glass icon to perform a blank search and show all students.

  3. Click Evaluate on the right side of the page beside a student’s name.

  • If you already saved or published feedback for a student, the Evaluate link will appear as Draft Saved or Published. You can click on either of these links to return to the Evaluate Submission page for the student.

  • If you are using anonymous marking, students’ names will not appear.

Delete submitted files

You can delete submitted files on the Assignments tab in myCourses.

  1. Click on the Assignment that contains the files you want to delete. Select the Submissions tab. 

  2. To delete individual files click on the (trash can) icon displayed on the right of the file you want to delete.

  3. To bulk delete files, select all submissions and click on the (Delete) button at the top of the Submissions tab.

  4. Click Yes on the pop-up that asks for confirmation.

View a document

You can view students’ submissions in the document viewer on the Evaluate submission page if your students use one of these file formats:

  • MS Word (.doc, .docx)

  • MS PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx, .pps)

  • Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)

  • Web (.htm, .html)

  • Plain text (.txt)

  • Images (.bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png)

  1. Access the Evaluate submission page for a student using the instructions in the Access the evaluate submission section.

  2. Click on the name of a file to view the submission.

  3. Click the Toggle fullscreen icon in the top-right corner of the page to automatically maximize the document preview to the width of the document viewer.

Enter scores and feedback

  1. Access the Evaluate submission page for the first student in your list.

  2. On the right side of the page, enter a numeric grade in the Overall grade field.

  3. Provide feedback using any of the following options:

    • Grade students using a rubric.

    • Enter comments directly in the Overall feedback textbox (limited to 300,000 characters).

    • Annotate directly on the file using the tool box at the top-right of the document viewer.

    • Click File upload to upload comments in a separate document.

    • Record audio or video feedback.


  4. Click Save draft to save the score without releasing it OR click Publish to save the feedback and release it to the student.

    1. If you are using anonymous marking, the option to publish the feedback per student is disabled. Click on Next student to go to the Next Student submission. See further details under Release scores and feedback to all students.

  5. Click Next student to go to the next student’s submission. 

  6. Click Done.

  7. If you used the Save draft button when grading all submissions, see Release scores and feedback to all students to release feedback to your class.

If the assignment is associated with a grade Item, any scores and feedback you publish from the Evaluate Submission page will automatically be exported to the Grades tool and will overwrite any scores or feedback you have already entered there.

Edit a copy of a submitted file

If your students submit their assignments in .html or .txt format, you can use the Edit a Copy feature to edit and/or annotate your students’ submitted files without downloading them.

  1. Access the Evaluate Submission page for a student.

  2. Click the arrow beside the file name and select Edit a Copy.

  3. Enter your feedback in the textbox that appears.

  4. (Optional) Click the Advanced tab and use the font colour icon to change the colour of your comments to distinguish them from your students’ text.

  5. Click Attach Change.

The edited copy with your annotations will be saved as an attached file under the Feedback textbox.

Release scores and feedback to all students

  1. On the main Assignments page, click the name of the assignment with saved feedback. 

  2. Select 200 from the per page drop-down list at the top-right corner of the submission list.

  3. Select the checkbox at the top-left corner of the submission list to select all students.

  4. Click Publish feedback.

  5. In the pop-up window that appears, click Yes.

If you are using anonymous marking:

Click on Publish all feedback to publish the feedback. If you did not evaluate all students’ work, a warning prompt will appear.

Retract feedback

If you accidentally published feedback and want to change it back to draft mode, you can retract it. Retracting feedback will not delete the grades and feedback.

  1. Access the Evaluate submission page that contains the published feedback you want to retract.

  2. Click Retract at the bottom-right corner of the page.

  3. In the pop-up window that appears, click Yes.

Delete feedback

  1. Access the Evaluate submission page that contains the feedback you want to permanently delete.

  2. Remove all Score and Feedback text.

  3. Click the red X icon beside any attached files.

  4. Click Save draft or Update.
