Overview of grades in myCourses

The Grades tool in myCourses allows you to enter and manage your students' grades. The Grades tool also allows your students to view the grades that you have entered. This article explains what instructors and students will see when they access the Grades tool.

View grades as an instructor

When you click Grades on the Navigation Bar (with an instructor role), you have access to three pages: 

  • Grades Setup Wizard: If your course contains no Grade Items, clicking on Grades will take you to the Grades Setup Wizard page. The Grades Setup Wizard options determine the Grading System that will be used in the course and the Display Options for the instructor and student views of Grades.

  • Enter Grades: The Enter Grades page allows you to enter grades for all students and grade items. Each grade item appears as a column.

  • Manage Grades: The Manage Grades page allows you to create, edit, reorder, and delete Grade Items and organize them into Grade Categories.

You can hover your mouse over any icons to view more information.

  • image-20240321-200949.png Hidden: The item is hidden from students.

  •  Hidden (date restricted): The item is hidden from students. It has an upcoming Start Date or an End Date that has passed. Hover your mouse over the icon to view the date restrictions.

  • Visible (date restricted): The item is visible to students. It has a Start Date that has passed and/or an End Date that is upcoming. Hover your mouse over the icon to view the date restrictions.

  •  Conditionally Released: The item has Release Conditions. It is visible only to students who have fulfilled those conditions. Hover your mouse over the icon to view the attached release conditions.

  • Excluded from Final Grade Calculation: The item will not count towards students' final grades. This option is enabled on the Properties tab of the item when using the Points Grading System.

  • Bonus Grade Item: The item's scores will be added on top of students' final grades (or the grades for a category). This option is enabled on the Properties tab of the item.

 

You can change the default start page for Grades by clicking Settings in the top right corner of the page and selecting a different page from the Default Grades Area drop-down list.

View grades as a student

When students click Grades on the Navigation Bar, they see a list of Grade Items and any grades that have been entered and released. The Final Grade is only shown if instructors manually release it.

Preview a student's view of grades

  1. On the Enter Grades page, click the name of the student whose Grades page you want to preview.

  2. Click the arrow beside the name of the student at the top of the page and select Preview.
