Create True/False, Multiple Choice, and Multi-select questions in myCourses

True/False questions

When selecting a question field a pop-up toolbar is displayed for formatting the text and adding images, links, and graphical equations.

  1. In the Question Text field, enter your true/false question. A preview of the question appears in the preview pane as you begin creating the question.

  2. In the Answers area, select True or False as the correct answer.

  3. Set the number of points for the true/false question.

  4. From the Options drop-down list, optionally, specify the following:

    • Add Feedback: In the feedback text boxes next to each answer, you can enter optional feedback that students will see if they select that answer.

      • This feedback will appear in a word balloon during a self assessment (always), during a survey (if give instant feedback is enabled), or after a quiz (on the Submissions page if the Submission View has been set up for that quiz. See See Release quiz answers to students in myCourses for more information).

    • Add Hint: Add a hint to the question.

    • Add Short Description: Add a short description to the question.

    • Add Enumeration: From the drop-down list, select the type of numbers or letters that will appear before the answer (1, 2, 3, ...) or (A, B, C, ...), or select “no enumeration” if you do not want letters or numbers to appear before the words “True” and “False.” To select how you want your options to be enumerated, select an option from the Add Enumeration > Enumeration drop-down list.

  5. Click Save.

Multiple-choice questions

Multiple-choice (M/C) questions present a statement or question with a list of possible answers for which students must choose the best possible answer.

If you create a multiple-choice question that has more than one possible answer, you can weight the answer according to the “correctness” of each possible answer. For example, if two answer choices out of five options are accepted as correct, both can be weighted 100% and the other three options can be weighted at 0%. If all five answer choices are accepted as correct but some are “more correct” than others, each can be weighted in ascending order with the “most correct” answers weighted more than the least correct answers.

  1. In the Question Text field, enter your multiple-choice question. A preview of the question appears in the preview pane as you begin creating the question.

  2. In the Answers area, enter the answers to the question.

  3. To add more answers, click Add Answer.

  4. To delete an answer, click on the “X” icon beside the answer field.

  5. If you want to randomize the order of the choices for students on the quiz, select the Randomize answers for each learner checkbox. Do not use this option if you want to have an answer like “Both B and C” or “All of the Above” because the answers beside B and C will be randomly assigned and the “All of the Above” option will be in a random position with random answers (or no answers) above it.

  6. Set the number of points for the multiple-choice question.

  7. From the Options drop-down list, optionally, specify the following:

    • Add Feedback: Enter optional feedback students will see if they select a certain answer.

      • This feedback will appear in a word balloon during a self assessment (always), during a survey (if give instant feedback is enabled), or after a quiz (on the Submissions page if the Submission View has been set up for that quiz. See Release quiz answers to students in myCourses for more information).

    • Add Hint: Add a hint to the question.

    • Add Custom Weights: Add a percentage weight for each answer. Enter 100 in the box beside the correct answer. You cannot choose more than one correct answer.     • Add Short Description: Add a short description to the question.

    • Add Enumeration: From the drop-down list, select the type of numbers or letters that will appear before the answer (1, 2, 3, ...) or (A, B, C, ...), etc. or select “no enumeration” if you do not want letters or numbers to appear before the words “True” and “False.” To select how you want your options to be enumerated, select an option from the Add Enumeration > Enumeration drop-down list.

  8. Click Save.

Note that there are letters in front of the answers due to the enumeration setting.

Multi-select questions

The Multi-select question type is similar to Multiple-choice questions, except it allows students to select more than one answer. For Quizzes, where you need to specify which answers are the correct ones, check the box in the Correct column next to each correct answer.

When selecting an answer or question field a pop-up toolbar is displayed for formatting the text and adding images, links, and graphical equations.

  1. In the Question Library, from the New button, click Multi-select Question (M-S).

  2. In the General area, enter your multi-select question details (such as Points, Questions Text).

  3. In the Options area, do the following:

    • Enumeration: From the drop-down list, select the type of numbers or letters that will appear before the answer or select “no enumeration” if you do not want letters or numbers to appear before True and False in the question.

    • Style: Click the circle buttons to select whether you want the choices to appear Vertical, Horizontal, or in a Drop-down list.

    • Randomize options: Select this checkbox to randomize the order of the choices for students on the quiz. Do not use this option if you want to have an answer like “Both B and C” or “All of the Above” because the answers beside B and C will be randomly assigned and the “All of the Above” option will be in a random position with random answers (or no answers) above it.

    • Add option #: Enter a number in the box and click the Add option button to add that number of extra choices and make the question more difficult.

    • Grading: See below for details about three possible options.

    • Value: Enter the correct answer in one box and the incorrect answers in the remaining boxes. These boxes cannot be left blank.

    • Weight (%): Enter 100 in the box beside the correct answer. You cannot choose more than one correct answer. If you would like to give full or partial marks for any other answers, see Create True/False, Multiple Choice, and Multi-select questions in myCourses for more information.

    • Feedback: Enter optional feedback students will see if they select a certain answer. This feedback will appear in a word balloon during a self assessment (always), during a survey (if give instant feedback is enabled), or after a quiz (on the Submissions page if the Submission View has been set up for that quiz.     • Remove: Click the Remove Entry icon to delete an option. This is useful if you want three choices instead of four.

    • Grading: Select your grading method:

      • All or nothing: Gives a student full points for selecting all correct answers. If a student makes one wrong selection, they will receive zero. .

      • Right minus wrong selections: Gives a student points for selecting correct answers and subtracts points for selecting incorrect answers. 

      • Correct answers, limited selections: Points are evenly distributed across correct answers only. Gives a student points accordingly depending on how many correct answers, but does not subtract for wrong answers. 

  4. Click Save.
