Edit, regrade, and delete quiz questions in myCourses

Editing the question will not fix the scores for students who already took the quiz.

Removing a quiz question will not change the total points for the quiz for students who already took the quiz. In this case, we advise instructors to follow the steps under "Update the scores for a question" and enter the maximum points for the question in the Give to all attempts field or manually regrade each student.

In this article:

Update the scores for a question

If you tried to edit a question students already answered, the original version will appear under Questions that have been edited, may need regrading at the bottom of the Questions tab. You must update this version of the question along with the one in the main list.

  1. On the main Quizzes page, click the arrow beside a quiz and select Grade.

  2. Click the Questions tab.

  3. Select Update question scores.

  4. Click the name of the question you want to fix.

  5. On the Update questions score page, you will need to determine the Grading type you would like to use:
Give to all attempts allows you to give points to all students for a specific question, regardless of how they answered the question. For example, you can reset the question scores for all students to zero and remove points that were incorrectly assigned:

    1. Select the radio button beside Give to all attempts.

    2. Enter in the points field.

    3. Click Save, and then click Yes to apply the new points.

Give to attempts with answer allows you to give points to all students that answered a question with a specific answer. For example, to assign the correct score to the correct answer:

    1. Select the radio button beside Give to attempts with answer.

    2. Select or enter the correct answer(s).

    3. Enter 1 (or the maximum value of the question) in the points field.

    4. Click Save.

  6. If you edited the question during the quiz, scroll to the bottom of the page and repeat the steps for any older versions of the question under Questions that have been edited, may need regrading.

  7. Once you have saved your changes, you will notice a new entry in the Modifications log. This shows any changes made, including the date, time, and name of the modifier. Modifications at the top will override any modifications at the bottom.

  8. Click Go back to questions if you need to update scores for more questions.

If you are updating a Multi-selectMatching, or Ordering question with Right minus wrong or Correct answers as the grading method, the method will become All or nothing unless you update the scoring for all possible selection combinations, matches or orders on the Update page. This may not be feasible for questions with several options. See Grading quizzes for instructions on how to grade these questions manually.
