Hide and release content in myCourses

You can change the visibility of content to hide course materials from students until you choose to release specific items. Additionally, you can set Start dates to schedule the release of visible content, set End dates to hide content in the future, and set Due dates for content that will appear to students in the course Calendar

Current content experience

Hidden Modules and Items will appear to instructors with the Hidden iconimage-20240312-161531.png  . Hidden Modules and Items remain hidden even if there is a Start Date set for them.

  1. On the Course home page, click Content on the Navigation Bar.

  2. Click the name of a Module in the sidebar.

  3. Click Bulk edit

  4. Eye icons will appear beside the Module description and the beside the name of each Item

  5. Click the eye icon to toggle Visibility on and off for individual Modules and Items.

  6. Click Done editing to save your changes. 

New content experience

Hidden Units, Lessons, Folders, and Items will appear to instructors with the Hidden icon .

If you make a Unit, Lesson, or Folder invisible, then it will also hide the child material within that section.

  1. On the Course home page, click Content on the Navigation Bar.

  2. Click the name of a UnitLessonFolder, or Item in the sidebar.

  3. Turn Visibility on and off with the toggle at the top of each page. Your changes will be automatically saved.

Release content

Current content experience

By default, all Modules and Items are made visible to students immediately after you create them. You can Add dates and restrictions to any Module or Item and select dates when the Module or Item will be shown to (or hidden from) students. 

  1. On the Course Home page, click Content on the Navigation Bar.

  2. Click Table of contents or the name of a Module in the sidebar. To edit dates for Items within Sub-modules, select the Sub-module in the sidebar.

  3. Click Bulk edit.

  4. Click Add dates and restrictions... below a Module or Item.


    Start date, End date, Due date, and Release conditions options will appear.

  5. As shown in the screenshot above, you can edit one or more of the following options:

    • Start date: Click Add start date… to select a date and time when the Module or Item will appear to students.

    • Due date: Click Add due date… to select a due date that will appear to students in the Calendar.

    • End date: Click Add end date… to select a date and time when the Module or Item will be hidden from students.

    • Release conditions: Click Create to set various conditions that students must fulfill to view the Module or Item. See Release conditions in myCourses for more information.

  6. Click Update to save your changes.

New content experience

  1. On the Course home page, click Content on the Navigation Bar.

  2. In the sidebar click on the name of the item you want to edit.. Click on the ... button and select Edit.

    While this alternate look and feel is still in development, the new Create/Edit Experience is being piloted as an opt-in/out option. This means that you can switch between the new and current Create/Edit Experiences at will. By default, the current Create/Edit Experience is shown. To switch to the new Create/Edit Experience, click the down arrow at the top-right of the window to expand the new Create/Edit Experience dialogue box.

  3. Modify the Availability dates or Due date.

  4. As shown in the screenshot above, you can edit one or more of the following options:

    • Start date: Click Add start date… to select a date and time when the Item will appear to students.

    • End date: Click Add end date… to select a date and time when the Module or Item will be hidden from students.

    • Due date: Click Add due date… to select a due date that will appear to students in the Calendar.

  5. Click Save and close to save your changes.
