Best practices for lecture recordings in the classroom

If you want to use the Lecture Recording System in your classroom, you must add the Lecture Recordings link to your course navigation bar and sign up for the lecture recordings service (if in-person). More information can be found in the Enable the Lecture Recording System (classroom capture) in myCourses article.

Before you record

Before you record in your classroom:

  • Check the technical specifications for the classroom on the Classroom AV Services portal (log in with McGill credentials is required).

  • Decide what kind of microphone you want to use: podium or wireless. If you plan on walking around your classroom or writing on a blackboard/whiteboard, a wireless microphone is mandatory because the podium microphone will not pick up your voice.

  • If you are using a wireless microphone, make a booking with the Audiovisual loans - Equipment reservation form.

  • Check the recording schedule in the Lecture Recordings page on myCourses. More information can be found in the Enable the Lecture Recording System (classroom capture) in myCourses article.

In the classroom

Before you begin teaching your class:

  • Log into the panel on the podium of the classroom.

  • Check that the microphone is on.

  • Ensure that the proper microphone channel is selected.

Information on how the podium panel works in your classroom can be found on the Classroom AV services portal (log in with McGill credentials is required).

Tips for ensuring that your recording's sound is captured:

  • If you are using a podium microphone, do not move around the class. Your voice will not be recorded. You will also need to stand directly in front of the microphone or it may not pick up your voice properly.

  • If you are using a wireless microphone, hold the microphone close to your mouth to ensure that your voice is captured. For the best sound quality, hold the microphone like you would a full sized microphone.
